Snowshoe Thompson's Ski and Snowboard Rentals
A Local Ski Shop Focused on Making Things Easy
Snowshoe Thompson's Ski and Snowboard Rentals was built with a clear purpose: to make renting winter gear in South Lake Tahoe as simple and stress-free as possible.
For many visitors, a trip to Tahoe is something they look forward to all year. It’s about getting outside, spending time with family or friends, and enjoying everything the mountains have to offer. But the rental process can sometimes get in the way—long lines, high prices, and rushed service can quickly take the excitement out of the day.
That’s exactly what we set out to change.
Instead of adding more steps, we’ve simplified everything. No reservations. No complicated booking systems. No unnecessary delays. Just a straightforward, walk-in experience that gets you what you need so you can move on with your day.
Our shop is located on Emerald Bay Road, in a spot that’s easy to access whether you’re heading toward Heavenly or exploring other areas around South Lake Tahoe. Customers often stop in on their way to the mountain, get fitted quickly, and head straight out without having to deal with crowded resort rental shops.
It’s a small shift in where you rent—but it makes a big difference in how your day starts.

Built Around Walk-In Convenience
One of the most important things to understand about our shop is that everything is designed around walk-in customers.
We don’t require reservations, and that’s intentional.
Travel plans don’t always go exactly as expected. Weather changes. Schedules shift. Sometimes the best days on the mountain are the ones you decide on that same morning. By keeping our process flexible, we give customers the freedom to make those decisions without being locked into a booking.
This approach works especially well for:
Visitors who prefer a relaxed, flexible schedule
Families coordinating multiple people and gear sizes
Groups arriving at different times
Travelers who decide to ski or snowboard at the last minute
When you walk in, you’re not stepping into a system—you’re just getting help from a local shop that’s ready when you are.
Carrying the Spirit of Tahoe’s Winter History
The name Snowshoe Thompson isn’t just a label—it’s part of the region’s history.
Snowshoe Thompson was known for traveling across the Sierra Nevada in harsh winter conditions, delivering mail on snowshoes long before modern roads and ski lifts existed. His story represents resilience, practicality, and a deep connection to the outdoors.
That same mindset influences how we operate today.
We believe winter activities should be accessible, not complicated. Whether you're skiing, snowboarding, or heading out on snowshoes, the goal is to make it easy for you to enjoy the environment—not spend your time dealing with logistics.
Our shop reflects that approach. We focus on practical solutions, reliable service, and helping people get outside without unnecessary barriers.
A More Personal Approach to Service
One of the biggest differences between a local shop and a large resort rental center is how customers are treated.
At Snowshoe Thompson’s, we keep things personal.
You’re not being rushed through a line or handed equipment without explanation. Instead, you’re working with people who take the time to make sure everything is set up correctly and that you feel comfortable before heading out.
If you’re new to skiing or snowboarding, we’ll help you understand what you need and how everything works. If you’ve done it before, we’ll make sure you’re set up quickly and efficiently so you can get back to what you enjoy.
We also know the local area, which means we can offer helpful insight if you’re unsure where to go or what conditions to expect.
what the Experience Feels Like
From the moment you walk through the door, the goal is to make things feel straightforward and comfortable. You won’t find a crowded, high-pressure environment. Instead, you’ll be greeted by a team that’s focused on helping you get what you need without overcomplicating the process.
We’ll ask a few simple questions:
Have you skied or snowboarded before?
What are you planning to do today?
Do you need clothing or just equipment?
From there, we guide you through the process step by step. Equipment is selected based on your experience level and comfort, and everything is adjusted to fit properly before you leave.
The process is efficient, but it’s not rushed. We take the time to make sure everything feels right, because we know that comfort and confidence matter once you’re out on the snow.
Reliable Equipment You Can Count On
Having the right gear isn’t just about performance—it’s about safety and comfort. that’s why we maintain all of our equipment carefully and consistently. Every rental is checked, adjusted, and prepared so that customers can head out with confidence.
Our inventory includes:
Skis for beginners through advanced riders
Snowboards for a wide range of skill levels
Snowshoes for exploring trails and quieter areas
Cross-country ski equipment
Winter clothing such as jackets and snow pants
Additional gear and accessories for a complete setup
We understand that not everyone travels with winter gear, especially visitors coming from warmer climates. Being able to rent everything in one place removes a lot of stress and makes the trip easier overall.
Helping You Avoid Common Rental Frustrations
Many of our customers come to us after experiencing the typical challenges of resort rentals.
Those often include:
Long wait times, especially during busy periods
Higher pricing compared to local shops
Limited flexibility with reservations
A rushed, impersonal experience
By stopping at our shop instead, you avoid most of those issues. You’ll spend less time waiting, pay a more reasonable price, and start your day in a more relaxed way. For many people, that alone makes a noticeable difference in their overall trip.
Serving a Wide Range of Customers
We work with all kinds of people throughout the winter season.
Some are first-time visitors seeing snow for the first time. Others are experienced skiers who return to Tahoe year after year. We also see families, couples, solo travelers, and local residents who need gear for a day or two.
No matter the situation, the approach stays the same:
Keep it simple. Keep it reliable. Make sure the customer leaves ready for a good experience.
We don’t assume everyone knows exactly what they need, and we don’t expect customers to figure things out on their own. That’s what we’re here for.
A Shop That Fits Into Your Day
Timing matters when you're planning a day on the mountain.
We’re open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM during the winter season, which typically runs from November through April. This schedule allows customers to stop in early before heading out or later in the day if plans come together last minute.
Because we focus on efficiency, you won’t lose valuable time standing around. Most customers are able to get fitted and on their way much faster than they expect.
That means more time enjoying the snow—and less time dealing with logistics.
Why People Keep Coming Back
Many of our customers return year after year, and the reasons are pretty consistent.
They know they can rely on us. They know the process will be easy. And they know they won’t have to deal with unnecessary complications. It’s not about offering something flashy—it’s about delivering a consistent, dependable experience that people can count on.
That’s what builds trust, and that’s what keeps people coming back whenever they’re in South Lake Tahoe.
Stop In Before You Head to the Slopes
If you’re planning a day of skiing, snowboarding, or exploring the snow, Snowshoe Thompson’s Ski and Snowboard Rentals is ready when you are.
You don’t need a reservation. You don’t need a complicated plan. Just stop by, get fitted, and head out.
It’s a simple way to start your day—and a better way to enjoy everything Tahoe has to offer.
